Recommended Viewing: Eyes of the Rainbow

If you have a free 45 minutes this weekend, you should definitely check out this 1997 documentary by Cuban film director Gloria Rolanda about Assata Shakur.  You will hear Assata Shakur speak about her life, her activism, and her life in Cuba. It also includes interludes of Afro-Cuban music and artistic expression.  It's a tribute to women warriors and the African ancestors.  Check it out.

  3. Good afternoon Anitta, I just finished watching the film and it was very enlightening and sad. She was very strong to survive the torture that she went through while incarcerated. Smh she was the only female in an all male prison. I loved all the music. It was like they were releasing their pain through the songs. Every song meant what was going on in the scenes. Assata= She who struggles. Olugbala= For the people. Shakur= Thankful.

    1. I'm so glad you watched it, Katrina! Yes, it's shocking how the justice system treated her. I, too, loved the music. The songs communicate so much, and I think it's true that they and their stories survive through their songs, through the release and expression in music.
