In our class discussions, we've wondered a lot about how the mother and the son view race and why the mother tells her son to forget about the issue, and you made wonderful observations, inferences, and predictions on what might be motivating the mother and what she might have been through. We've got a good mystery here and we're picking up clues. Here are some of the subsequent chapters in the book where you get to explore these things a little more, check out some of the inferences and predictions you've made, and in chapter 5, you get to hear the mother tell some of her own story.
