Homework:
Reread "The Bicycle" highlighting mentions of looking, staring, gawking (any words for seeing, basically) in one color and words for ignoring or avoiding or looking away in another color. Try adding comments on what you think the mother is thinking or feeling as you try to put yourself in her shoes.
